A Few Updates From the Sportsman Pits (4/24/11)

Derick Bailey Home from the Army for the Easter holiday and racing Dan Richardson's pristine, '71 Chevy Nova. Derick joined the US Army in July of 2009, and is a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, based at Fort Bragg, NC. I think we all joke about jumping out of perfectly good airplanes, this guy takes it serious. At a young 20 years of age, Derick has a strong drag racing background with us here at Bunker Hill Dragstrip. His first drag racing experience was with Jr. Dragsters in 1998. Success is no stranger with this racer, his last year of Jr's, 2005, he appeared in nine finals, with five wins. This past Saturday's Sportsman action has Derick taking a tough loss in the second round against the always, competitively tough guy, Andrew Brough. We would like to extend our thanks to this brave young man for his service. And during our weekly pre race introduction and playing of our National Anthem, when Dave mentions our heroes protecting our freedoms, here is a young man doing just that. Please be safe Derick.

Racing again. Don Rausch, right, hasn't raced since.... 1979, just a minor 31 year hiatus. Some truck pulling and tractor pulling did fill a bit of the void. Don is back to drag racing this year, we are glad that he has chosen to race with us here at Bunker Hill Dragtrip. Welcome back Don, he claims to have always had a great passion for drag racing. Don, you may have noticed a few things have changed while you were gone. Don is now racing an '89 Chevy S-10 with Alan Fritz small block Chevy power under the hood. As a member of the Pacers Car Club from Winamac, In., Don helped the club run races here at Bunker, back in the day when the car clubs alternated weekends of promoting the races. He claims to have first raced in 1963, and continued through 1978, placing 2nd in points with his 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle. Farming and family were the big reason for his departure from weekly racing, grain farming 2,400 acres does take a person's attention. He did occasionally stop in for a race and to visit with racing buddy Jeff Rife. Don's success has been limited so far, but we do see a win in this guy's future.

A New Racer Joe Gribben, left, from Wabash, In. Welcome Joe. Fresh competition is always good, and a semi-final finish your first week out, against veteran Greg Danford, is a great way to start. Joe has owned this 1969 Chevrolet Camaro for the last five years. Detailing the car to a very sanitary condition, along with suspension upgrades and motor/transmission improvements has made the car a very dependable racer, running in the 7.80's, 1/8 mile. This is a fine example of our entry level category of Sportsman, as Joe really does drive this car to and from the track.

New Color for Shawn Morgan, right. With a little help from the very talented Larry Robertson, this past off season found the '72 Chevrolet Vega wagon in Shawn's shop getting a face lift. A tip of the toastmasters royal zero to the artistic duo, nicely done. The performance level is at a solid 8.0's level, but the paint looks way faster. Shawn started racing here with us at Bunker Hill Dragstrip in 2009, in the Sportsman division, with this very car. Success has come his way at the Sportsman level this year, a win on April 17, and a runner up this past Saturday, April 23rd. He has added another race car to the stable with the purchase of a 1969 Camaro. The car originated in Florida, and with Shawns efforts, and some advice from racing bud Rick "Rocky Wadd" Wood, he is comfortably in the 6.50 range with a mild small block Chevrolet under the hood. These are a few of the noticeable things that we ... noticed. No guarantee that we can do write ups like this on a weekly basis, the weather is the big factor for sitting at the computer this week. If anybody would like to contribute, don't be shy, give us some verbage and we'll see if we can get it to work. We probably have over a thousand pictures on file to go along with a story. (4/24/11)

Jr. Drag Racing League Challenge Results for April 30.
Nick Isenhower, near lane, defeats Morgen Wood in the 2011 Jr. Drag Racing Challenge, Major Division
Minor Division, Joseph Trisler, near lane, takes the win over Lexi Tanner. A great turnout of Jr Dragsters for the 2011 edition of the Bunker Hill Dragstrip Jr. Drag Racing League Challenge, this past Saturday, April 30, 2011. Fourteen cars made the call for first round of Jr. Majors. Round one action; Devin Isenhower wins over Wyatt Shupperd, Morgen Wood wins over Jarret Braden, Collin Richardson defeats Nathan Lash in a near heads up match, Hannah Weber scores one for the girls over Nate Kelley, Nick Isenhower dispatches Evan Wilson on a break out run. The final two pair has Mackey Wiles over Vicki Harris in an all girl duel and Preston Tanner taking out Mason Marino. Round two; Wood eliminates D. Isenhower's chances in a double break out/identical reaction time event, Wiles eliminates Weber in her second all girl match up, N. Isenhower gets around Tanner for the win, and Richardson receives the odd lot bye run. Semi finals; N. Isenhower defeats Richardson with the start line advantage in a dead on the dial match, Wiles falls to Wood by taking too much stripe and going under the dial. Final round; Nick Isenhower takes a .033 start line advantage, runs 8.00 on a 7.98 dial to take the win over Morgen Wood's .044 initiated 8.05 on his 8.04 dial. Jr. Minor Division has a bit of a short field with only two making the first round call which makes it the final. Joseph Trisler, Wabash, In. takes the win over new driver Alexis Tanner, Rensselaer, In. The box score shows Trisler having a .168 reaction time and running 13.59 on his 13.45 dial. Tanner can't wait for the green and leaves before the third amber. Both racers were invited back to be part of the second chance race due to the short field. Second chance race has all nine eligible racers making the show. Four rounds later Mason Marino, Tinley Park, Il. gets the automatic win over a broken Nathan Lash, Kendallville, In. Jr. Dragsters are raced weekly at Bunker Hill Dragstrip. The time slot is generally 1:30 pm time trials, with eliminations beginning at 2:30. During the summer months this allows us to complete the Jr.'s program prior to the Summit Series Bracket Cars beginning their time runs. -BHD- |

4th Annual Olson Paint & Body Wheelstand Contest

A J Fiorelli puts on the show and takes the win at this years annual event. Scoring for the contest consist of the total length of the wheelstand plus the 1 thru 10 score card system of five randomly drawn judges from the crowd. Fiorelli took the round one lead with a length of 177 feet coupled with a crowd pleasing 47 from the judges. Fiorelli did have a bit of a hard landing at the end of the first session causing a minimal delay for the trans fluid clean up. Meanwhile, a round of bracket competition was completed, repairs made and we are back for session two. This time out Fiorelli takes advantage of the two attempt per session rule, and has it pay off with a 148 foot pull and a perfect judges score of 50. Total score for two sessions, 422.

Ricky Kirkpatrick puts on a great show as well, but ends up just 15 tally's behind the winner to take the second place finish, as he did at the 2010 event. Kirkpatrick, in the first session, hangs it out to 140 feet, and pleases the judges to a 43 score for a first round 183. Second session Kirkpatrick puts up a beautiful 176 foot hoop hanger and the judges respond with a 48 for an evet total of 407, just 15 shy of the number one spot. The unique thing about Kirkpatrick's racer is the all steel body and the small width slicks that he uses in the mostly stock wheel wells.
